Gonabad city is located along the tourism route of Torbat Heidarieh to the south of the province. The city of Gonabad is located in the dry and semi-desert region of the desert. Gonabad's aqueducts originate from the Barakouh mounts. Barakouh covers the whole of Kakhak area, which has mountainous and cold weather; it is colder than the Gonabad plain. The remaining evidences including the ancient sites and hills illustrate the human life in the prehistoric period at this area. The Qasba Aqueduct of Gonabad, which some attribute its construction to Bahman son of Esfandyar, indicates the prosperity and centrality of this area in ancient times. On the other hand, in the traditions of Shahnameh, Gonabad has been the epical arena of war and battle in the mythological era; some areas of Gonabad have been named in the epics of Shahnameh. This city at the beginning of Islam was called "Janabad", which has come to the era of Islamic civilization, and it has been having particular importance based on the writings of historians and geographers.
