The Jackal Den (ghale shoghal)
The establishment of a major portion of the qanat headrace in the dense layer of conglomerate has prevented it from degradation, especially in the reign of the access shafts. Moreover, the study of soil and water samples shows that , due to the high level of bicarbonate in the water, there is a high degree of sedimentation occurring in the qanat headrace. The results of the dredging work done in the region, confirms this fact. The obstruction of some of the tributary channels of the qanat has been due to breaking down of the wells cover into it or entry of flood into the qanat from one or more shafts. After entry of flowing waters into the shafts in May 1995, part of the qanat headrace was obstructed. Because of the possibility of large animals such as jackals and foxes entering into this part, it has been known as the Jackal den. The Jackal Den is located in kalout and at shallow depths. The soil in this region tends to fall, therefore part of the channel has been expanded inside the headrace.
